How to Help a Nervous Child Feel Comfortable at the Hair Salon

Taking a child to the hair salon can be a challenge when they feel nervous, anxious, or simply unsure about what to expect. Whether it is their second visit or their twentieth, some children find the experience overwhelming — and that is completely normal.

At Kids Hair Play, our stylists work with anxious children every single day across our salons in Sutton Coldfield, Hagley Road Birmingham, and Wolverhampton. Here are our tried-and-tested tips to help your little one feel at ease.

1. Talk About It Before You Go

Children fear the unknown. A few days before the appointment, chat casually about what will happen: sitting in a fun chair, a friendly stylist using gentle scissors, and how great their hair will look afterwards. Avoid saying “it won’t hurt” — that can actually introduce the idea of pain. Instead, focus on the positives: “You get to choose which cartoon to watch while you sit in the chair!”

2. Choose a Child-Specialist Salon

A standard adult salon can feel clinical and intimidating. A dedicated kids salon like Kids Hair Play is designed from the ground up for children — colourful decor, fun chairs shaped like cars and animals, tablets with cartoons, and stylists trained specifically to work with young or nervous children. The environment makes a huge difference.

3. Book at the Right Time

Avoid scheduling haircuts during nap time, meal time, or when your child is already tired and irritable. Mid-morning on a weekday tends to work best — the salon is quieter and your child is usually well-rested and fed.

4. Bring a Comfort Object

A favourite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal can provide a sense of security. At Kids Hair Play, we are happy for children to hold onto their comforters throughout the appointment. Some children also respond well to bringing their own headphones with familiar music or an audiobook.

5. Let Them Watch First

If your child is very nervous, arrive a few minutes early and let them watch another child having their hair cut. Seeing a relaxed child in the chair can help normalise the experience. You could also show them short videos of kids getting haircuts at home before the visit.

6. Stay Calm and Positive Yourself

Children are remarkably perceptive. If you are visibly anxious or keep asking “are you okay?” repeatedly, your child will pick up on that energy. Stay relaxed, smile, and use a calm, cheerful tone. Your confidence reassures them that everything is fine.

7. Use Distraction Techniques

At Kids Hair Play, every station has a screen with children’s programmes and games. Distraction is one of the most effective tools — when a child is engaged in watching Peppa Pig or playing a game, they often barely notice the haircut happening. Bring their favourite show loaded on a tablet as backup.

8. Start with a Trim, Not a Transformation

For a nervous child, keep the first few visits simple. A quick trim rather than a full restyle means less time in the chair and a quicker positive experience. As they build confidence over multiple visits, you can gradually extend the appointment.

9. Celebrate Afterwards

Make the haircut part of a fun outing. A trip to the park, an ice cream, or a small sticker reward afterwards creates a positive association. At Kids Hair Play, every child receives a certificate and a small treat after their appointment — building that sense of achievement.

10. Be Patient — It Gets Easier

Most children who are nervous at first become completely comfortable after three or four visits to the same salon. Consistency matters: the same stylist, the same salon, the same routine. Familiarity breeds confidence.

When It Might Be More Than Nerves

Some children have sensory processing differences that make haircuts genuinely distressing — the sound of scissors, the sensation of cut hair on their skin, or the feeling of water. If your child’s reaction goes beyond typical nervousness, our team has specialist experience with sensory-friendly and autism-friendly haircuts. We offer quieter appointments, sensory tools, and adapted techniques to make the experience comfortable.

Book a Visit

If your child is nervous about haircuts, you are not alone — and you do not need to struggle through it at a salon that is not set up for children. Get in touch or book online at any of our three locations. Our stylists genuinely love helping nervous children discover that haircuts can actually be fun.
